iOS 13 Wishlist: Always On Display
Soon after Apple’s September 2017 Keynote, OLED displays were brought into the lives of iPhone users. Apple announced that the iPhone X will bring the first ever in an iPhone OLED screen.
A large proportion of iPhone fans, had a secret hope: Apple will introduce an Always On Display feature for their beloved iPhone X.
A year later Apple introduced the iPhone XS and XS Max that both have a stunning OLED screen and of course their latest and greatest version of iOS, iOS 12.
Unfortunately, Apple focused so much on optimizing the performance of iOS that we didn’t see any significant or at least some of the long awaited, from Apple’s hardcore fan base, features.
Among these, the Always On Display feature, remains a dream for iPhone users. Considering that the sales of Apple’s flagship phones are worse than forecasted, we should be expecting from Apple trying to differentiate the XS lineup from the iPhone X. This would turn more iPhone users upgrade to the iPhone XS/XS Max sooner.
For those unfamiliar with the concept of Always On Displays, we could say the following:
OLED displays have the ability to turn on / off each pixel separately
this means that in black areas the pixels are turned off
when text or image(s) are displayed in an OLED displays the only pixels that are turned on are those that display the text and/or image(s)
many Android phones are allowing these information (text and/or images) be displayed while the phone is locked and the display should normally be turned off
the info displayed is constantly moving (even slightly) to avoid potential burn-in issues with our displays
This means that with minimum power consumption we can view some basic (or more) information while our phones are still locked and left on the table, a desk etc.
We have created an iOS 13 concept that shows how an Always On Display could be introduced by Apple. We have decided to include a lot of information in our concept, just to prove that Always On Displays could vary from a very simple notification line to a seriously customizable pack of information.
What do you think; would you like to see this feature arriving for your iPhone?
