How-To Remove Duplicate Photos & Videos From Your iPhone

Introduction

One of the best new iOS 16 features is the ability to identify and delete duplicate photos and videos directly from your iPhone without the need to download any app from the App Store. Check our instructions below for a step-by-step guide on how to do this.

Requirements

  • Applications: Photo app by Apple

  • iOS Version: iOS 16.0 and later

  • Supported iPhones: iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone SE 2020, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone SE 2022, iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max

How-To

  1. Open Photos application

  2. Select the “Albums” tab on the botton

  3. Scroll down and select “Duplicates” under “Utilities”.

You will now view your duplicate photos and videos to appear next to each other.

At this point, you have three options:

    1. The first is to Tap Merge next to each set of duplicates to combine the duplicates. Then tap Merge X [X: number of photos] Items.

    2. The second option is to select the photo(s) which you want to delete and delete them one by one for more precise control.

    3. The third option is to tap Select on the top right of your app, choose either Select All on the top left or Select next to each set, then tap Merge X [X: number of photos] Items on the bottom center to merge the Duplicate photos and videos.

“Merging combines the highest quality version and all of the relevant data across the duplicates, and keeps that one in your library. The remaining duplicates are moved to the Recently Deleted album.” according to Apple.

  4. To clean up duplicate photos entirely from your device, open “Recently Deleted” album under Utilities in Photos app, check if you accidentally deleted any photos and then delete the remaining photos completely from your iPhone. Please pay close attention to this step, since you will not be able to recover any of the photos deleted from the “Deleted Album”.
