Apple Unveils the Apple Watch Series 9: Improved Specs & Sustainability

Apple has unveiled the anticipated Apple Watch Series 9, showcasing all of its latest advancements in smartwatch technology and a noteworthy commitment to environmental sustainability. The Series 9 introduces several new features and enhancements, including the potent S9 SiP chip, an innovative double tap gesture, a brighter display, and an upgraded on-device Siri. What sets this release apart is Apple's dedication to sustainability, offering consumers the option of a carbon-neutral Apple Watch for all models, a substantial step toward achieving their ambitious 2030 carbon-neutral objective.

New Tech Inside

At the heart of the Apple Watch Series 9 lies the S9 SiP chip, Apple's most powerful watch chip to date. This custom silicon powers a range of enhancements, including the brand new double tap gesture, which allows users to control the watch with a simple double-tap of their index finger and thumb. This feature facilitates easy navigation, from stopping timers to answering phone calls and even taking photos with the Camera Remote.

The S9 SiP's efficiency ensures that the Series 9 maintains its impressive 18-hour battery life, while a brighter display, reaching up to 2000 nits, ensures readability in all lighting conditions. Furthermore, Siri's on-device processing, now able to access and log health data securely, offers quicker and more reliable responses to user queries, including those related to health and fitness. Unfortunately, we should not expect improved battery life on the new Apple Watch as the increased efficiency of the S9 chip is offset by the brighter display.

Precision Finding and Integration

Apple Watch Series 9 introduces Precision Finding for iPhone, thanks to the inclusion of a second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip. This feature provides precise location information, visual, haptic, and audio guidance to locate a misplaced iPhone, even when it's in another room. Additionally, the U2 chip enhances integration with HomePod, automatically launching Now Playing when near the speaker.

Apple's Pledge to Sustainability

One of the most significant strides with the Series 9 is Apple's commitment to environmental sustainability. For the first time, customers can opt for a carbon-neutral Apple Watch, aligning with Apple's goal to achieve carbon neutrality across its entire business by 2030. The company has drastically reduced carbon emissions from materials, electricity, and transportation, while any remaining emissions are offset through nature-based projects. Additionally, Apple's packaging is now 100 percent fiber-based, further reducing its environmental footprint.

Availability and Pricing

Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch SE are available for pre-order today and will be in stores starting September 22. The Series 9 starts at $399 (U.S.), while the SE begins at $249 (U.S.). Apple is also introducing eco-friendly bands, including FineWoven, made from recycled materials, and updates to existing bands, making them more sustainable. Leather bands will no longer be available for purchase since Apple will be using other more environmentally friendly materials.
