Emergency SOS Via Satellite For The iPhone Launching Soon

Emergency SOS Via Satellite For The iPhone Launching Soon

Apple issued a press release announcing that they already announced emergency SOS via satellite service will be launched within November. Hence, all iPhone 14 users will soon be able to send a message or make a call directly from their iPhone in case of an emergency. The life saving advantage of this feature is that you will be able to call emergency services through satellite networks, even in places where cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity is unavailable.

This is an iPhone 14-exclusive feature since special new hardware is required for it to work. Fortunately, Apple has equipped all four iPhone 14 models with the required new modem, from the base iPhone 14 to the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple’s Advanced Manufacturing Fund invested 450 million USD in order to build the required infrastructure for this new service. A majority of this funding went to Globalstar, a global satellite service headquartered in the USA.

The emergency SOS via satellite feature, is the result of Apple’s collaboration with Globalstar. Globalstar’s global satellite network is the one used by Apple for this service.

Unfortunately, this feature will only be available in the US and Canada. Most probably, Apple will expand Satellite Connectivity to other countries as well. The service will initially be free for two years for all new iPhone users. However, no relevant plans have been announced until now.
