iOS 13: Rumour Round-up

iOS 13 is the most anticipated Apple release of 2019 along with the new iPhone lineup coming in September 2019. Apple is famous for its inclusive approach when it comes to the supported devices of each new iOS version, since the latest OS usually becomes available even for devices that were released 5 years ago.

What should we expect for this year’s release. Let’s break it down:

  • Dark Mode: The anticipated black theme that was expected to arrive along with the iPhone X which was the first iPhone with an OLED display, is almost confirmed to arrive this year. Information from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman point towards a grey and black theme close to the one available for MacOS as of 2018. Dark Mode will be turned on/off through the control centre.

You can view on the right one of the concepts that we had created which tries to reproduce the way that Dark Mode will be enabled via the Control Centre. Looks really nice and easy to be accessible from there. Android Q is introducing this feature as well on an OS level.

  • New keyboard features: Apple is rumoured to be working on new keyboard option including swipe typing. This will allow users to “type” a word simply by using a one move gesture across selected letters that form a specific word. This is a feature, currently available via third party keyboards in iOS like SwiftKey.

  • Optimisations: Apple engineers are working to deliver an ever efficient and less buggy version of iOS. Animations, including when multitasking and closing applications will also be reworked. Current iPhones are supposed to feel faster and smoother than in iOS 12.

  • Health App: We expect a redesigned health application with an improved Dashboard that will allow you to view your current health status easily at a glance. There are rumours about a pill taking notification system included, that will simply remind you that it’s time to take your prescribed medication. There will also be a ‘hearing health’ feature that will inform you when hearing too loud music or how many hours you do spent with your connected AirPods or EarPods .

  • iPad as an additional display: Third party software developers have already created applications that allow you to use your iPad as an additional display to your Mac/MacBook Pro. Apple is rumoured to introduce a similar functionality to current iPads at an OS level. This means that you will be able to use your iPad as a second screen to your Mac. It would be even greater if Apple allows you to use the Apple Pencil and the touchscreen of your iPad to interact with MacOS.

  • New iPad exclusive features: New Multitasking Interface, Multiple tabs/windows of the same application and a new redesigned HomeScreen.

  • Revised Reminders App: Reminders app is having a clean and fresh look and feel but is still lacking many of the features available in third party applications, Apple is expected to deliver a refreshed version of the app, which will add more features and four default sections (all tasks, today tasks, scheduled and flagged tasks).

  • Updated Screen Time with more parental control tools.

  • New Books app set up in a way that will encourage users to read more. It is unclear if Apple will also be delivering an e-Ink mode available within the Books application. This would adjust the colour and brightness of the display to protect our eyes more.

  • iMessages: New profile pages will arrive in iMessages. They will be able to be set up within the iMessage application and will look similar to those found on third party messagings apps, like WhatsApp and Viber. A dedicated section will also be added that will allow you to easily exchange Animojis and MeMojis.

  • Reworked Maps: Maps will help you navigate more easily within your frequently visited location like Home and Work and will also allow you to upload photos from a specific place that you like.

  • New widget area. Widget area on the left of the notification centre will also be reworked and is expected to have a cleaner and refreshed look and feel.

  • Mail: Mail will also be tweaked to include some improvements but unfortunately we do not expect Apple to delivered a drastically redesigned application. Mail App on iOS and MacOS are clearly among the worst applications delivered by Apple. A significant rework is highly anticipated although not expected to arrive this year.

  • Safari Downloads Manager: One of the most requested features, especially from iPad Pro users, is reportedly being tested from Apple and could be delivered in iOS 13. An update of the Files application will also be coming as well; Files app will be adjusted to show all your Downloaded files.

  • New accessibility settings and hearing aid support, new Home app integrated with security cameras, different users enabled on the same HomePod that will allow multiuser interactions with Apple’s smart speaker, new share sheet automatically customized based on your history.

See below a concept that we have created. We have made the renders but used new iOS screen concepts from 9TechEleven. Apple_iDesigner, SkylineNews and Alvaro Pabesio. iOS 13 report is based on Mark Gurman’s analysis.
