Apple Discontinues The 21.5-inch iMac
Apple introduced the M1 iMac last spring, which has been a massive commercial success ever since. The 24-inch M1 iMac has been rarely available for instant purchase since its launch day, with long delivery times that extend beyond 3 weeks almost anywhere worldwide. Apple’s efforts to make a smooth transition to Apple Silicon have been obvious, especially when it’s almost impossible to meet the high demand for its new computers. Hence, keeping some readily available Macs in the current lineup has been beneficial both for Apple who increases its revenue and consumers who instantly need to purchase a Mac.
Something similar happened last May when Apple did not discontinue the 21.5“ iMac with Intel silicon which was basically the model that was being replaced by the new 24” M1 iMac. This Intel-powered 21.5-inch iMac was available at $1,099 in the US in a single configuration only: 7th-generation dual core i5 chip at 2.3GHz, 8GB of RAM, 256GB storage and an Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640.
Apple has decided to discontinue the 21.5” iMac which means that the current lineup of iMacs includes only the 24” M1 iMac and the 27” iMacs with Intel processors. The 21.5” intel-powered iMacs are currently available only as certified refurbished on Apple.com.
In the first half of 2022 the current 27” iMac is also expected to be replaced by a newer iMac with the new M1 Pro and M1 Max Apple chips, which means that the iMac lineup will soon include models with Apple Silicon only.
