New AirPods & AirPods Pro Firmware & How to update

Apple has just released a new firmware for the AirPods Pro and the second-generation non pro AirPods. New firmware version is 3E751 and replaces the former 3A283 that was released back in September 2020.

Apple doesn’t disclose any information about what the new firmware version adds. However, Apple usually improves connectivity, battery life, sound quality and ANC performance for the Pro version.

How to check your current firmware version

You can easily check the current firmware version of your AirPods by following the below steps:

If you are on iOS 14 / iPadOS 14:

  1. Go to “Settings”

  2. Tap “Bluetooth”

  3. Find your AirPods in the list of your Bluetooth devices (for example, "9TechEleven’s AirPods Pro").

  4. Tap the information button next to your AirPods Pro and check “Version” which corresponds to your AirPods firmware version.

Should your device is running an older version of iOS then you can find this information under: Settings > General > About and scroll down to see your device’s name (for example, "9TechEleven’s AirPods Pro"). Tap on the name and check “Firmware Version”.

How to force update the hardware on your AirPods

There is no official way to update the firmware of your AirPods, but there is a workaround that usually forces your device to update faster.

Try following the below pattern:

  1. Connect your AirPods to your device and play any video or song for at least half a minute.

  2. Place your AirPods back on their case

  3. Charge the AirPods case with a Lightning cable (not via wireless charging nor MagSafe) for at least 30 minutes.

  4. Keep your iPhone close to your AirPods.

  5. Connect your AirPods to your iPhone again after 30 minutes.

This process works also with your iPad. Should your AirPods aren’t updated after you complete the above steps, you can repeat them again.
