Background Info
The iPhone 13 Pro is the most powerful iPhone ever and one of Apple’s best smartphone designs. However, a big portion of Apple fans would like an iPhone without a notch. The notch is definitely a unique design element that makes an iPhone immediately noticed. It also influenced the entire smartphone industry which quickly adopted the notched and started designing bezel-less phones.
However, the notch remains a compromise. A design choice from Apple which tried to overcome the incompetence of the smartphone industry to either miniaturise the camera or hide the cameras and other sensors under the display.
Android OEM’s started to ditch the notch after 1-2 generations. They took advantage of Samsung’s punch-hole displays and got rid of any 3D face unlocking methods (with few exceptions). This allowed them to achieve a higher screen to body ratio than Apple.
Apple considers 3D face unlocking a more secure authentication method than fingerprint unlocking. So ditching Face ID on the iPhone seems highly unlikely. Jon Prosser last year, revealed that Apple is working to hide the Face ID sensors under the display and deliver a design with a punch hole display.
This design option would make the iPhone look a lot like the existing Android phones. A dual-punch hole display or as many call it a displays with a pill-shaped camera cutout could be the solution to get rid of the notch but also keep Face ID. Hiding most Face ID sensors below the display apart from the IR camera and front facing camera may would give Apple a higher screen-to-body ratio. In case you do not recall, Android phones had the dual punch hole display on either the left or right side but in in the centre of the display. So, iPhones would still look unique by adopting such a display.
Latest information points towards this design choice from Apple which seems to be well received by hardcore fans on social media.
