Apple Introduced New Default Browser Selector on the iPhone
Apple has just released a revised iOS 17.4 Beta 1 version, now featuring a significant new addition on top of the rest new features: the Default Browser Selector. This change, particularly relevant for users in the European Economic Area (EEA) as Apple announced, aligns with the requirements of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), set to be complied with by March 6. In iOS 17.4, EU iPhone users will encounter a new screen in Safari, showcasing the 12 most popular web browsers in their country's App Store, with Safari also included in this list. The appearing order is random each time this list appears.
This update empowers users to choose their preferred default browser, regardless of whether it's currently installed on their device:
If the chosen browser isn't installed, the system prompts for its installation and subsequent setting as the default.
Additionally, if the browser is already installed but not updated, an update is required to set it as the default. Users retain the flexibility to change their default web browser anytime through the settings, similar to the current process in iOS 17.3.
