Apple Event: "Peak Performance" Announced For March 8, 2022
Apple has officially announced the upcoming Apple Event for March 8, 2022.
Apple is expected to unveil the 3rd generation iPhone SE (iPhone SE 3) with A15 and 5G at less than $400, the new iPad Air 5, possibly new Macs and the new versions of its operating systems including the long awaited iOS 15.4 with “Mask ID”.
iPhone SE 3
The new iPhone SE 3 is expected to popularise 5G even further. This is expected to be Apple’s most affordable iPhone with 5G at an estimated starting price of $399. Apple’s latest flagship A15 chip is anticipated to power the new entry level iPhone making it the fastest smartphone at this price range.
However, the design of the 3rd generation iPhone SE is expected to be identical to the current 2nd Gen. model that was released 2 years ago. Possibly, the iPhone SE 3 might include a new colour option.
The camera module is also expected to remain the same as the iPhone SE 2, however the photo & filming capabilities are expected to be further improved thanks to the 16-core neural engine of the A15 (compared to the 8-core A13 of the SE 2).
iPad Air 5
The iPad Air 5 is also expected to bring 5G and A15 Bionic chip to the iPad Air line. This will bring significant performance gains to the mid-tier iPad which will benefit the most demanding tasks and applications. The front facing camera is also expected to support centre stage while the rear facing camera could now be benefited by the addition of a flash.
The latter, alongside the new iPad Air color options might be the only design differences compared to the current iPad Air 4. Simply put, the design of the iPad Air 5 is expected to remain unchanged.
Apple OS Updates
Apple’s operating systems will receive a booster during March with the addition of some key 2021-2022 features. iOS 15.4 will finally add the ability to use Face ID while wearing a mask and glasses for all iPhone 12 and 13 models. This implementation will allow users to perform any Face ID action (password fill, use Apple Pay etc.) without the need to take their masks off. Unfortunately, previous iPhone generations are unsupported.
Another hit feature coming to the owners of a supported Mac and iPad are also getting Universal Control which is one of macOS Monterey’s key features.
New Mac(s)
Things on the Mac side are a bit more blurry. Three new Mac models have been registered in the Eurasian Economic Commission and are expected to be released soon. Furthermore, several reports claim that Apple is about to introduce a base MacBook Pro 13.3’’ replacement during this event, with the new M2 chip replacing the current base MacBook Pro and the M1 chip. However, it is highly unlikely that Apple will proceed with the release of the M2 chip before all M1, M1 Pro/Max powered Macs are released (MacPro, larger iMac and a Mac mini with the M1 Pro or M1 Max chip).
Taking into account the above, the most likely scenario includes a spec bump on the current Mac mini with more powerful Apple Silicon inside, before a major redesign occurs next year.
